Social media marketing with video: is online video watched?

If you came to Reach Further’s workshop on Viral Videos last week, led by Delia Macnamara of imagine dpm, you’ll know that there are a LOT of videos out on the web and it takes expertise and luck to make a video a viral success. According to a study reported on today though, a third of all videos are shared online (source: collaborative study, from Yahoo, market research firm Interpret LLC, Warner Bros. Media Research, Havas Digital, and Omnicom’s PHD). (Reported by Online Media Daily)

The report also reveals that those who watch videos – and they watch them at all times of the day and night – are half as likely to ignore online adverts as TV adverts – and they are 28% more likely to pay attention to online advertising.

Online video is popular – some spend nearly 32% of their time online watching video, and about 70% of respondents to the survey watched online videos at home and at work. Good news if you’re planning to venture into viral video as part of your social media marketing strategy.

Addendum

According to the Pew Research Center’s Internet & American Life Project, in a survey in April this year they found that the number of online adults who watch videos on video-sharing sites has nearly doubled since 2006: now it’s 62% of adult internet users who have watched video. And 19% of all internet users watch video on a video-sharing sites on a typical day (it was 8% in 2006).
