Twitter vital in the Iranian election dissemination
In order to get out information from Iran about the aftermath of the recent disputed elections, blogs and Twitter have been vital. Iran has one of the highest numbers of bloggers per head of any country in the world, and the social web is proving that it is impossible to suppress freedom of information. Bloggers are linking to relevant posts and Twitterers are retweeting, so that news gets out fast.
Twitter and its web hosts have even rescheduled planned maintenance and downtime in order to keep the channels open for those in Iran. US tweeters will be inconvenienced at the time now chosen for the scheduled downtime, which will now be at 2-3 pm PST (1:30 am in Iran) and 10 pm in the UK. It’s a small step in the direction of supporting free speech, and some good publicity for Twitter and its hosts!
