Open Source gets the Government seal of approval
The UK Government today backed the Open Source movement launching its Open Source, Open Standards and Re-Use Government Action Plan.
Calling the Open Source movement “one of the most significant cultural developments in IT and beyond over the last two decades” it celebrates the achievements of the groups of ndividuals who collaborate over the Internet to create products that are as good as, and often better than those that cost very much more from big companies.
Companies, organisations and even the public sector can become “more innovative, more agile and more cost-effective” by exploiting and contributing to these community-generated initiatives. It has led to Open Standards movements which have pioneered new ways of thinking about copyright, intellectual property rights and the availability of information for re–use by others.
