Social networking – a rosy future?

Recent reports of social networking’s demise may be slightly premature says a recent report on Click at the BBC website.

There are many rather frivolous applications on Facebook and the like involving turning oneself into a vampire and biting one’s friends, throwing sheep, cmpeting for the ighest number of “friends” or  comparing oneself to others in a myriad of pointless quizzes.  Despite this however, social networking has many useful and worthwhile uses, says the article.  I have to agree. It’s clear from the figures that maybe joining social networks is no longer the big hot trend, but that social networking is settling down into its role in bringing people together for practical as well as social purposes.

Particularly when built into communities, a social network can provide an excellent way for those with a common interest to stay in touch.  People are providing information and opinions to each other and collaboratively constructing a useful store of knowledge.

Finally in the article, Travis Katz from MySpace is quoted as saying:

“I think the ones that are going to be most successful are not going to create a standalone community somewhere else because it’s hard to do, and people are only going to be members of so many communities.

“Instead they are going to tap into existing communities on the internet.”

The combination of a well-managed community-based network and RSS feeds is an excellent way of capitalising on social networking.
