Influential Women in Technology

The BBC’s dot life blog reports on the 45 most influential people in technology. Tim Berners Lee is at the top of the list, which probably reflects the British bias of the judges and the context of the vote (on the Web!). I find it very sad that there are only 3 women, and two of those are dead! (Although I’m happy that Ada Lovelace made the cut.)

Attempting to redress the balance, I tried searching the Web for influential women in technology, but they come out mostly American.

Some interesting women I spotted on the lists include:

  • Vanessa Dimauro, online community builder, Leader Networks (USA), and a fellow member of e-mint
  • and Padmasree Warrior, who is the Chief Technology Officer of Cisco Systems, who was at least born outside the US (in India)

Moving over to this country, the BlackBerry Women and Technology Awards 2008 will honour the achievements of women, both within and beyond the IT sector. The closing date for the awards is Monday 18th February 2008, and the ceremony is on May 8th. As it involves a “pitch” by the nominees, there’s a certain “blowing your own trumpet” flavour to these awards. But that’s true of many of them.

Previous winners have included Shirin Dehghan, CEO, Arieso, winner of BlackBerry Outstanding Woman in Technology 2006 (and ‘Best Woman in Technology at a SME’).

Lesley Cowley, Nominet’s CEO, was awarded the First Woman of Technology in the 2007 First Women Awards.
